Offlineok this will be a bit long winded since it comes from the poorly translated manual, but I wanted you guys to read it and tell me what you think. Here's what it says word for word, spelling mistakes included:
OPTION OF THE LUBRICATION (FIG 15)
It is main factor that the lubrication influences on the performance of the engine and life at the same time , influences on the emission of the motorcycle.
And so ,must according to the rules for selection and lubrication of the changing .no using general engine oil, gear oil, veretable oil,etc replacement.
When the motorcycles ex-factory with the engine oil of the gasoilne engine of 15W/40-SE grade , whose optimal temperature is -10-e+40 e . without purchasing ,can make use of SE, and SC grade engineof the gasoline engine of API(USA petrol organization ) if need change other lubrications ,whose the grade of the quality should come to SE grade , adhensive degree should select the referende capyion according to the cricumatances of the various regions and weather changing .when the change the lubrication ,please release the original lu-brication of the camshaft till finishing .after cleaning ,according to the rules injecting the new lubrication .
If can not buy the engine oil of the gasoline engine of 15W/40-SE grade ,can make use of ROB-10# (temperature is below -10 e regions using HQB-6#) engine oil instead .forbidding to use general engine oil and vegetable oil.
REMARKS:
FORBIDDING TO USE THE LUBRICATION OF OTHER BRANDS ,OTHERWISE WILL DAMAGE TO ENGINE.
What that sounds like to me "…If can not buy the engine oil of the gasoline engine of 15W/40-SE grade ,can make use of ROB-10#…" is that if I can't find 15W/40 (BTW what is the SE and SC grading?) that I can use 10W/40 engine oil… do you think that's what it's saying? or am I way off base?

OfflineLOL… ;D
Your manual and mine were written by brothers.
Here is brief explanation on thei ratings.
http://www.upmpg.com/motor_oil…..te_gas.htm
Although I don't want to undermine the importance of oil and the manufacturers recommendations, most times, advances are made in their chemistry and the old oils, although still perfectly compatible, become outdated so references are made to compatible oils. It is my opinion that you can very well exceed all their expectations for oil by selecting any current oil which meets their required rating.
However, you got a motorbike. I look for oils that are JASO MA rated, which is a must for "wet clutch" service or a brand that directly denotes wet clutch service. You have a wet clutch and must therefore get that service rating or you will be slipping gears and all kinds of annoying and damaging moments.
If you want to stick with a 15w40 as recommended, they are out there, but I would recommend Rotella T with Triple Protection 15W-40. A little on the costly side if you ask some, but I believe it will far exceed the requirements of the bike and compared to the cost of a new engine, cheap, cheap, cheap.

OfflineDon't use synthetic… Thats a personal rant… :-X
BUT especially don't use synthetic during break in… You'll permanatly damage your clutch.
To argue further…
Oil may have changed but that engine has not.
Change your oil on the regular to the manufacture specs. and with the manufatures specs. Clean your slinger ever so often.
The manufature pumped countless hours into R&D (in this case it was china using the R&D from Japan) so they could know when it was the right time and with what oil should be replaced…. Now it would behoove them if that information/oil change schedualing made the engine last longer…
:-X :-X :-X :-XAT any rate I don't like arguing about oil……. "Change your oil, and use motor oil" :-X :-X :-X :-X

OfflineAltaire,
It's true. Don't use synthetic to break in the motor and that is why I recommended the Rotella 15w40, which exceeds your manufacturers recommendations and is spot on their recommended weights.

As far as personal rants go, everything is personal when it comes to your bike so forget about change this in the winter and that in the summer. That's a personal preference that contradicts using the manufacturers recommendation and would only be pertinent if the temperature changes in your area would be extreme which I suspect aren't. Just change it with the manufacturers recommendation and always bring your engine to temperature summer or winter.
Either way, we can all agree to disagree, but the important thing is no synthetic during break-in and change the oil often, regardless which you choose. ;)

OfflineYah it came with a sight glass (the picture isn't the actual one, it's one I snagged from the internet), I'll upload a bunch of detailed pics of the bike when I have a bit of time. Right now I'm kinda stop and go doing this all on my phone lol.
BTW I figured out the oil level issue… it was an ID. Ten. T. error. When I was using the sight glass the bike was tipped on the kickstand and moving all the oil away from the sight glass lol… :-[ When I tipped the bike up it showed it full. /facepalm

It gets worse. Some manufacturers tell you to "dip" the stick, others will say "screw" the stick and you're standing there tripping with one eye on the fill because something just doesn't seem right and the other eye on the warranty telling you to do it this way or void. :'(
You have a sight glass and that is a very nice treat. No reason not to check your oil now.
